Soya Manchurian or Soya Chilli is a hot and spicy, sweet and sour, chewy and crispy - all in one easy to make Indo-chinese starter or appetizer. This is prepared by frying soya chunks and then tossing it in delicious, lip-smacking sauce.
My family loves Chinese food and I prepare it at home atleast once in 15 days. Manchurian and chilli are among our Indo-chinese favorites. This appetizer or starter is also a very good accompaniment for your cocktail and mocktail parties, game night or any get together.
Is soya chunks high in protein?
100 g of Soya chunks or Soya nuggets contains approx 53 g of protein. Yes, It is a complete source of protein. If you are vegan or vegetarian, I would recommend eating it at least once or twice a week. For me soya chunks are one of the best vegetable protein.
Is it good to eat soy daily?
Apart from being high in protein, soy products (edamame, soy milk, tofu, soya chunks , soya nuggets) are also good source of folate and vitamin C. But like any other food, it has its own pros and cons. So the key message is to eat it in moderation like any other food.
Is soy chunks or soya nuggets good for weight loss?
Soya Nuggets are one of the best veg protein that is low in fat and cholesterol. You should consume it at an equal calorie levels as of other foods. Soy generally makes you full faster and remain full for longer time, thus aids for weight loss and fat loss by decreasing calorie intake.
How to prepare soya chunks manchurian or soya chilli or soyabean manchurian?
You can prepare the sauces and fry the soya chunks side by side.
To begin with soak soya chunks in hot water for atleast 15 minutes. After that nicely squeeze out the soya chunks and transfer this to bowl. To this add all purpose flour, corn flour, garlic powder, onion powder and salt to taste. Feel free to add chile powder and ginger garlic paste to this if desired.
Deep fry the soya chunks in oil till they are crispy. For a healthier version you, can simple stir fry or shallow fry it on a pan with little oil till it becomes crisp.
For the sauce :
Add oil to pan and chopped garlic and saute till it starts becoming light in color. Next add spring onions, ginger, green chile and continue sauteing for minute or two. Add chile sauce, soya sauce, vinegar, ketchup, chile powder, cilantro or coriander leaves and mix till everything is combined on high flame.
Just before you are ready to serve, add the fried soya chunks to get that chewy and crispy feeling, spring onions and mix. Isn't this quick and easy ?
This is a dry version of manchurian or chilli. If you like to have a bit of gravy then mix 1 teaspoon of corn flour to ½ cup of water and see that there are no lumps. Add this along with other sauces and cook for additional 3 minutes till the sauce or gravy thickens.
Very important tip: To avoid from eating soggy soya chunks, add it to the sauce and toss only before you are ready to serve. The fried chunks will remain crispy for 30 mins to an hr.
You can use the same recipe to prepare gobi manchuri, paneer manchuri, babycorn manchurian, mushroom manchurian, tofu manchurian. Non vegetarian can feel free to substitute it with chicken or your favorite meat.

Soya Manchurian (Soya Chunks Chilli)
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups Soya Chunks or Soya Nuggets
- 3 tablespoon All purpose flour (Maida)
- 3 tablespoon Corn Flour
- 1 teaspoon Onion powder
- 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- Oil for frying
For the Sauce
- 1 tablespoon Oil
- 1 tablespoon Garlic cloves finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon Ginger finely chopped
- 2 tablespoon Onions finely chopped
- 2 tablespoon Green onions (spring onions) finely chopped
- ½ tablespoon Green chile finely chopped
- 2 tablespoon Chilli Sauce (of your choice)
- 2 tablespoon Soy Sauce
- 1 tablespoon Vinegar
- 4 tablespoon Tomato ketchup or sauce
- 1 tablespoon Cilantro or coriander leaves finely chopped
- ½ to 1 teaspoon Red chile powder or paprika (optional)
Instructions
Step 1
- Soak soya nuggets or chunks in hot water (approx 4 cups) for 10 to 15 minutes or till it becomes soft.1 ½ cups Soya Chunks
- Squeeze it off nicely to remove any excess water.
- To this add all purpose flour, corn flour, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and mix till combined.3 tablespoon All purpose flour, 3 tablespoon Corn Flour, 1 teaspoon Onion powder, 1 teaspoon Garlic powder, 1 teaspoon Salt
Step 2 (Frying Soy Nuggets)
- Heat oil in pan or kadai for frying.Oil
- Fry these soya chunks (from Step 1) on medium flame till they become crispy and golden.
- Transfer this to paper towel to absorb any excess oil. Keep this aside.
Step 3 (For the sauce)
- Heat oil in pan. Add garlic cloves and saute for minute.1 tablespoon Oil, 1 tablespoon Garlic cloves
- Add ginger, onions, spring onions, chile and continue to saute for another 3 to 4 minutes till you get nice aroma.1 tablespoon Ginger, 2 tablespoon Onions, 2 tablespoon Green onions, ½ tablespoon Green chile
- Add chilli sauce, soy sauce, vinegar, ketchup, chile powder, cilantro and mix till combined on high flame.2 tablespoon Chilli Sauce, 2 tablespoon Soy Sauce, 1 tablespoon Vinegar, 4 tablespoon Tomato ketchup, 1 tablespoon Cilantro, ½ to 1 teaspoon Red chile powder
- Lower the heat and cook this for additional one minute. Check the taste of sauce and adjust accordingly. The sauce should be sweet, spicy and sour.
- When you are ready to serve toss the fried soya chunks in the sauce prepared.
- Soya Manchurian or Soya Chunks Chilli is ready. Garnish with spring onions, cilantro and red onions if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy.
Notes
- Instead of onion powder and garlic powder you can even use ginger garlic paste if desired.
- Vary the amount of ingredients in the sauce recipe as per your taste.
