Sweet Rice Appo | How To Make Sweet Appe Or Paniyaram

Sweet Rice Appo or Appe or Paniyaram is a soft and delicious melt in mouth Indian recipe prepared using rice, banana, jaggery (or sugar).
The sweet version of appe is mainly prepared on the occasion of Ganesha Chaturthi or sankashti chaturthi.
Modak and Appe is believed to be lord Ganesha’s most favorite food and twenty one modak and appe are offered as Naivedyam. I wish you all a very happy Gowri Ganesha Festival.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Rice
  • 4 small Ripe Bananas or 1 large banana
  • 2 tablespoon Poha or Flattened rice
  • 3 tablespoon Coconut grated
  • ¾ cup Jaggery or Gur or brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Semolina or Sooji - optional
  • ¼ teaspoon Cardamom powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Baking soda
  • Salt a pinch
  • 2 tablespoon Butter melted, for greasing appe pan

Instructions

  • Wash and soak the rice in water for about 1 to 2 hours and drain them.
    1 cup Rice
  • I have used 3 small riped bananas. You can even use 1 large banana.
    4 small Ripe Bananas
  • Grind the soaked rice, 2 bananas , poha, coconut, jaggery adding very little water to form smooth paste.
    2 tablespoon Poha, 3 tablespoon Coconut, ¾ cup Jaggery
  • Transfer this to bowl. Add semolina or sooji rava (optional), baking soda, cardamom powder, pinch of salt and mix well. The batter should be of medium thick consistency.
    1 tablespoon Semolina, ¼ teaspoon Cardamom powder, ¼ teaspoon Baking soda, Salt
  • Let the batter rest for 1 hour for better result. You can also cook the appos immediately if desired.
  • Chop and add remaining banana to the batter and mix well.
    4 small Ripe Bananas
  • Heat appe pan and add butter or ghee into all the holes. Pour the batter on each holes, cover with the lid and allow it to cook in medium flame.
    2 tablespoon Butter
    How to make appe or Paniyaram
  • When it is cooked from one side turn and cook on the other side adding butter till its golden brown on both the sides.
  • Repeat the process for remaining batter.
  • Sweet Rice Appo is ready. Serve hot with ghee and enjoy.

Notes

  • Depending on the sweetness of the banana vary the amount of jaggery.
  • You can also substitute jaggery with brown sugar or sugar.
  • If you do not have appe or paniyaram pan, you can also try this on ebelskiver pan or cook dosa or pancake from the same batter.
