Mushroom Puli Munchi | Mushroom in Hot and Sour Gravy

Mushroom Puli Munchi is a spicy and tangy, flavorful dish prepared using chilies, tamarind and aromatic spices. This gravy can be served with hot steamed rice, or with any variety of dosa or pancakes. The dish is ready in less than 30 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Coconut oil or vegetable oil
  • 1 large Onion chopped or cubed
  • 12 oz Mushroom sliced, by weight 350 grams
  • Salt to taste

To Dry Roast

  • 10 Dry Red Chilies
  • 2 tablespoon Coriander Seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • ¼ teaspoon Fenugreek seeds Methi
  • 2 teaspoon Black peppercorns

Other Ingredients to grind

  • 5 to 6 Cashews
  • 4 cloves Garlic
  • 1 inch Ginger
  • 1 Green chili optional
  • 1 tablespoon Tamarind about the size of half a lime
  • 1 cup Water

Instructions

Step 1

  • Dry roast red chilies, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, peppercorns on low to medium flame till you get nice aroma. Do not roast on high flame as this may burn the spices. 
    10 Dry Red Chilies, 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds, ¼ teaspoon Fenugreek seeds, 2 teaspoon Black peppercorns, 2 tablespoon Coriander Seeds
  • Grind the dry roasted ingredients along with cashews, garlic cloves, ginger, green chili, tamarind and water to form a smooth paste. 
    5 to 6 Cashews, 4 cloves Garlic, 1 inch Ginger, 1 Green chili, 1 tablespoon Tamarind

Step 2

  • In another pan, heat oil and add onions. Saute onion till it becomes translucent. 
    1 tablespoon Coconut oil, 1 large Onion
  • Add the mushrooms and saute till its halfway cooked. 
    12 oz Mushroom
  • Add the ground paste, salt to taste, water for desired consistency if required and bring it to a nice boil. 
    Salt, 1 cup Water
  • Reduce the heat to simmer, cover with the lid and cook for additional 8 to 10 minutes. 
  • Mushroom Puli Munchi or Mushroom In Hot and Sour Gravy is ready. Serve and enjoy. 

Notes

  • Vary the spices as per your taste.
  • You can use any meat of your choice if desired.
