Easy Homemade Parker House Rolls Recipe

Parker House Rolls, Boston Based rolls are soft, irresistable and delicious, buttery and classic dinner rolls that are slighlty sweet and have a crispy exterior.
These rolls are super easy to make and gets over in no time. One of the best rolls or buns recipe that can be served as a side dish for Thanksgiving, Christmas or any get together, parties

Equipment

  • 1 Baking pan
  • 1 Dough bowl

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cup Warm Whole Milk
  • 1 packet Active dry yeast ( 2 ¼ tsp)
  • 8 tablespoon Melted butter (1 stick) + more for brushing
  • ¼ cup + 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 ½ teaspoon Salt
  • 4 cups All purpose flour

Instructions

Step I

  • In bowl, add warm milk, 1 teaspoon of sugar and mix well. Sprinkle the yeast and let the yeast activate. This might take about 5 to 10 minutes.
    1 ½ cup Warm Whole Milk, 1 packet Active dry yeast ( 2 ¼ tsp)

Step II

  • Meanwhile, melt the butter if you haven't done already and let it cool.
    8 tablespoon Melted butter (1 stick) + more for brushing
  • Beat the egg in a small bowl and keep it aside.

Step III

  • Once the yeast activates, add the melted butter, beaten egg, salt, sugar and mix.
    ¼ cup + 1 teaspoon Sugar, 1 ½ teaspoon Salt
  • Add the all purpose flour and mix using a wooden spoon until the mixture comes together.
    4 cups All purpose flour
  • Transfer this to working surface and knead it for about 5 minutes till you get a very soft dough / ball.
  • Place the dough in lightly greased bowl. Cover it and let it rise in warm place for about 1 hour or until it is doubled in size.

Step IV

  • Lightly coat your baking pan with butter.
  • Transfer the risen dough to working surface, cut them into 15 equal pieces and make small balls or into desired any shapes.
  • Place these rolls in the baking pan ½ inch apart and cover it with warm towel.
  • Let it rise for about 1 to 2 hours or until doubled in size. at this point rolls start touching each other. (you can refrigerate the rolls at this point and bake when required. check tips )

Step V

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degree F.
  • Lightly brush the rolls with the melted butter and bake for about 25 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Parker House Rolls are now ready. Brush with butter just before you serve and enjoy. Happy Thanksgiving.

Notes

  • Amount of flour required or the time it takes for the dough to double in size depends on the weather conditions.
Make ahead Rolls or Refriegerator rolls  : Once the rolls double in size, cover the rolls and refrigerate upto 24 hours till you are ready to use. Let stand at room temperature for about 30 to 45 minutes. Meanwhile you can preheat your oven and then bake it as directed in the recipe.
To make Eggless Parker House Rolls you can substitute egg with milk powder or cream. If you have sour cream or yogurt or buttermilk you can even use that as well. Use ¼ cup of the above substitute per egg. 
To make rolls Vegan instead of butter use Vegan Margarine, almond milk for whole milk and egg with non dairy powdered milk. This is definetly going to change the taste and the texture of the rolls. But these are some of the best options for vegan diet.
