- 1 cup Warm water
- ½ cup Warm Milk
- 2 teaspoon Sugar
- 2 ¼ teaspoon Active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoon Vegetable oil or butter, softened
- 1 ½ teaspoon Salt
- ¼ cup + 2 tablespoon Honey Use agave for the vegan version
- 2 ½ to 3 cups All purpose flour
- 1 cup Old fashioned rolled oats or Instant oats , 2 tablespoon more for topping
Activate the yeast
In a bowl, add warm water, milk, and sugar and mix well.
1 cup Warm water, ½ cup Warm Milk, 2 teaspoon Sugar
Sprinkle yeast. Cover it and keep it undisturbed for 5 to 10 minutes until the yeast activates.
2 ¼ teaspoon Active dry yeast
Make the dough
Add vegetable oil, salt, and ¼ cup of honey, and mix well.
2 tablespoon Vegetable oil, 1 ½ teaspoon Salt, ¼ cup + 2 tablespoon Honey
Now add all-purpose flour and instant oats and stir using a wooden spoon until it forms a dough.
2 ½ to 3 cups All purpose flour, 1 cup Old fashioned rolled oats or Instant oats
Dust the working surface. Transfer the dough and knead for at least 6 minutes to form a soft, smooth dough. Add more flour if you feel the dough is sticky.
Place this dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover it and keep it in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
Bake the oat bread
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Place an oven-safe bowl filled with water on the bottom rack. This is done to get a good amount of moisture in the oven, which helps to give the bread a nice crust.
Warm 2 tablespoon of honey in the microwave for 10 - 15 seconds.
¼ cup + 2 tablespoon Honey
Brush the top of the risen bread loaf with honey and sprinkle some old-fashioned rolled oats on top.
Bake for about 35 to 40 minutes until it is nicely golden brown in color.
Allow it to cool down even before you slice.
Serve and enjoy.
- You may have to increase or decrease the flour in the recipe based on the weather conditions.
- During winter, for warmer temperatures, preheat the oven to 150 degrees F, turn off the oven, and then rest the dough.
- Baking time varies based on the oven. If the bread starts getting brown on one side, only then rotate the pan. Else, cover it with aluminum foil and continue baking.
- To make this bread vegan, use agave nectar or maple syrup instead of honey and plant-based milk for regular ones.
- Nuts, seeds, or dried fruits can be added while making the dough for additional flavor and texture.
- You can use only water or only milk for a rich version or combine the two as we did.
