Banana Rasayana or Balehannina Rasayana or Seehikarne is a traditional and popular recipe from Coastal Karnataka (Mangalore, Udupi, Kundapur), which can be prepared in less than 5 minutes using just 3 ingredients.
The recipe is called Balehannu Rasayana in Kannada. We call it Kele Hashale (hesale, hershale) in Konkani.
What is rasayana or hershale or seehikarane?
This rasayana is an instant & easy sweet recipe where ripe bananas (not overripe) or mango or musk melon are chopped into pieces and mixed with jaggery or brown sugar for desired sweetness, and then coconut milk is added to it. Toasted sesame seeds or til, cardamom powder, and cashews can be added for additional flavor.
Rasayana can be served as an accompaniment with dosa, idli (khotte or moode), shevai (rice noodles), poori, or even with some poha.
I like to eat it cold as it is. As it keeps you full for a long time, it is one of the best recipes to try during fasting, upvas vrat, or offer this dish as naivedyam during Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri.
Some variations to Rasayana or Hashale
- You can add ripe mango pieces during the season to make mango hashale or rasayana during summer.
- During Navratri, when cantaloupe or musk melon (chibbad or karbooja) is in season, chibbad hashale is popularly made as a welcome drink during this season. In kannada this is called ebudla hannina rasayana.
We don't wait for any occasions or festivals to make this rasayana. Whenever there are a lot of ripe bananas or freshly grated coconut or sweet cravings, my husband makes this all by himself. He loves it so much. The process is so short that we always postponed sharing this recipe on the blog, thinking we would post the next time we prepared this dish, and it never happened.
Recently we had been to an event where we had this rasayana with shevai (rice noodles), and this time, we thought we should post this recipe right away as it was something worth sharing. No recipe can be easier than this one. We also had many ripe bananas at home, and here it is.
Bachelors and beginners, this is one of the easiest yet tastiest recipes you can make. Also, no cooking is required to make this.
Recently we have tried banana rasayana topped over malai ice cream garnished with toasted cashews. So if you love trying new recipes, definitely serve with vanilla, malai ice cream, or tender coconut ice cream, and do share your reviews.
I wish you all a very Happy New Year 2022!
