About Panchamrita (Panchamrutha) Recipe
"Panch" means 5 in Sanskrit, and "Amrit" means nectar of immortality. Panchamrut means drink of gods. Panchamrit is made using five ingredients: cow's milk, yogurt, clarified butter (ghee), honey, and sugar.
In panchamrit abhishek (panchamrutha abhishekam), five puja items are poured on the murti, also known as an idol of the god, in sequence and then offered in teaspoons to the devotees as prasad.
Holy basil or tulsi is also added to panchamruta and naivedyam recipes. It's believed that anything offered to an idol should be pure. Tulsi has the potential to absorb positive energy called sattva gunas and keep away rajjas and tamas gunas.
Festivals and Pooja when panchamrut abhisheka is made
Maha Shivratri: The shiv lingam is bathed with a mixture of 5 ingredients. Some also do rudra abhisheka every Monday with panchamrit or water called jalabhisheka.
Krishna Janmashtami: Celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. Baby Krishna idol is bathed with panchamrit ingredients and given as prasad to the devotees.
Ganesh Chaturthi: During this festival, gana homa and panchamrita abhisheka are made to the idol as a part of the ritual.
Navratri: Festival of 9 nights offered to goddess Durga. As a part of tradition and rituals, abhishekam is performed to the idol or Shaligram.
Satyanarayan Puja: This puja is mainly performed for wealth, health, and prosperity. Panchamrit Abhishek is offered to Lord Satyanarayan, a form of Lord Vishnu, and sapada bakshya or sheera with banana and milk is also offered.
Panchamrut is also performed in temples during special poojas, ram navami, Durga puja, shrawan month, nagar panchami, Varamahalakshmi pooja, housewarming ceremonies, etc.
Ingredients & Significance
Milk (Doodh): This symbolizes purity and represents the nurturing aspect of life. Cow's milk is considered holy.
Yogurt (Dahi): Also known as curd, it symbolizes cooling and soothing quality and represents knowledge and prosperity.
Ghee (Clarified butter): Symobilzes strength and purity.
Honey (Madhu): Honey represents unity, bliss and happiness.
Sugar (Sharkara): Represents the sweetness of life.
How to make panchamrit?
Follow the same panchamrut recipe for pooja and panchamrit abhishek during janmashtami, shivratri, ganesh chaturthi, etc.
Make a jalabhisheka over the idol first with clean water. After that, I have done a jalabhishek (total of ¼ cup) after adding every panchamrit item. This is optional. You can add all the items and then do a jalabhiskeka at the end.
Step 1: Pour the milk over the diety, followed by little jalabhishek.
Step 2: Next, add yogurt or dahi to the idol and again some jalabhishek.
Step 3: Add ghee to the idol and again pour some water.
Step 4: Add honey and some jalabhisheka
Step 5: Add sugar and, finally, jalabhisheka. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Keep this aside.
Step 6: Pour your idol with more clean water. Perform flower decorations, and after naivedyam, aarti, serve this panchamrit to the devotees.
We offer panchakajjaya or sheera and dry fruits for naivedyam during any pooja or festivals, and during Ganesh Chaturthi, modak and appe are also prepared.
To see the positive results in any puja you do, shraddha, bhakti, and aur vishwas (faith, devotion, and trust) is very important above all.
Tips
- Jalabhisheka is performed in temples after adding every item from your panchamirit. You can skip if the idol is very small while making pooja at home. In Mangalore Udupi regions, tender coconut is also used instead of water.
- This style of panchamrit is totally different from the Palani temple style panchamirtham prasadam, prepared using jaggery, banana, dates, etc.
- Make sure you use pure ingredients and clean and fresh utensils while making puja.
- Panchamrit must be served within 3 to 4 hours. Any leftovers will not taste good afterward, and you must discard them to the tulsi plant or under the coconut tree.
- Instead of doing abhisheka, some also pour all the ingredients of panchamrut into a bowl and mix. Do naivedyam and offer it to devotees.
- All five ingredients are a must, and there is no substitute.
Tip by mom: If you have leftovers after offering to devotees, you can make Mangalore banana buns with them.

During Abhishekam 5, ingredients of panchmruta are poured over the idol, and rituals will involve the chanting of mantras and prayers. After naivedyam and aarti, devotees are given one spoon of panchamrit and tirtha as Prasada.
Panchamrita (Panchamrut) is a sacred offering in Hindu religious ceremonies and rituals. It is a mixture made of 5 components, which include pure cow's milk (doodh), yogurt (dahi or curd), ghee (clarified butter), honey (madhu), sugar (sharkara or mishri).
At room temperature, you can store panchamrut for 3 hours and for not more than a day in the fridge as the milk is not boiled, plus you are combining milk and curd here.
