About Peanut Sesame Chikki
Chikki is a traditional Indian sweet made using sugar or jaggery with peanuts, sesame seeds, and/or a combination of nuts. Chikki is also called Indian bars, brittles, gazak, maroonda, or patti.
Sesame seeds are called til, tilu, rasi, tal, nuvvulu, ellu and Peanuts are called groundnut, nelkadlo, shenga, mungfali (moongphali).
Chikki for Makar sankranti and Navratri
It is believed that offering til (sesame seeds) to maa Durga on the 9th day of Navratri in the form of naivedyam (bhog) and then partaking it in the form of prasadam relives the fear of death and prevents any accidents for the devotees.
Til, gur (jaggery), and sugar have a strong cultural link with Makar Sankranti celebrations. These are considered the best winter foods that keep the body warm and increase immunity.
Benefits of sesame seeds and peanuts
Sesame seeds / Til are a very good source of copper and manganese. They are high in proteins, reduce blood pressure, lowers cholesterol, prevent cancer and diabetes, and are very good for your skin and hair too. Peanuts are a good source of fiber and proteins. It also reduces the risk of heart disease and diabetes.
Ingredients for Peanut Sesame Chikki
- 2 tablespoon Honey
- 1 teaspoon Lemon juice
- ½ cup Sugar
- ½ cup Roasted sesame seeds
- ½ cup Roasted peanuts
- ¼ teaspoon Salt
How to make Peanut Sesame Chikki
- Grease a square plate or baking pan with butter or oil and keep it aside. You can also use parchment paper.
- I have used roasted peanuts and sesame seeds in my recipe. If you do not have roasted peanuts or til, make sure you roast them separately on a medium flame for about 4 to 5 minutes till you get a nice aroma.
- In a heavy bottom pan on medium heat, add honey, lemon juice, and sugar, bring it to a simmer and wait till it develops light golden (amber) color. This will take about 4 - 6 minutes. Do not add any water while making syrup. Stir only if needed. Stirring continuously or vigorously can result in the crystallization of sugar.
- Immediately add sesame seeds, peanuts, and salt and stir quickly.
- Transfer this to a greased plate and, using a greased rolling pin, spread out the mixture to desired thickness (about 1 cm thick).
- Let it cool down for about 5 minutes, and then using a greased knife, cut them into bars of desired shape and size. Doing so at this stage ensures that you get clean cuts.
- Let it cool completely. Then store them in an airtight container.
Pro Tips
- It is easy for sugar to burn after it melts and starts changing color. So do not go away once you begin the process 🙂
- I generally love to transfer the mixture once done to a wax/parchment paper so that I can roll it to desired thickness, and it makes cleaning up easier.
- If you do not want to grease your rolling pin, place another wax paper on top of the mixture and roll. Then remove it carefully.
- Generally, peanut chikki and sesame chikki are prepared separately, and even in stores, they come in different packs. I have combined the two in one as I love both of them, and it tastes amazing together.
- You can also add cashews, almonds, and pistachios to the same if desired. I have added honey to my recipe.
- If you are vegan, substitute it with agave nectar.
- I have used roasted peanuts and sesame seeds (til) in my recipe. Make sure you roast them if it is not done already by sauteing them on medium flame till you get a nice aroma for about 4 minutes.
