Aloo Chana Chaat or Potato Chickpea Salad is a sweet, spicy and tangy - all in one recipe that can be served as a starter or even had as an evening snack.
Nothing can beat Indian street food. Unique flavors, varieties and its affordable. You get it at a price that you wont believe 🙂 Chaat or street food is probably the only thing that I miss the most when I am in USA. So I end up preparing simple chaats at home every now and then.
Traditionally Aloo Chole Chaat is prepared using boiled chickpeas and potatoes. You can use canned chickpeas too. I just love the crispy and crunchy potatoes and thus I have fried them in the recipe. If you like to prepare a healthy version feel free to replace fried potatoes with boiled potatoes.
Tamarind chutney or sauce gives that sweetness and tanginess to the dish. If you find it difficult to find tamarind feel free to use any sweet and tangy dressing of your choice.
Chaat recipes are very flexible. This is just a reference and prepared as per my family's taste. You can vary all the ingredient amounts as per your liking.

How to make Chatpata Aloo Chana Chaat
Step I (Prepare Tamarind chutney or Sauce)
- Soak tamarind in around ½ cup of hot water for an hour and then squeeze out the juice from tamarind. Discard the fibrous pulp.
- To this tamarind water, add salt, brown sugar or jaggery, chaat masala and mix. Bring this to a boil for 4 to 5 minutes or till it thickens.
Step II
- I like cripsy potatoes for the chaat. So I have deep fried them in oil. For a healthy version you can simply use boiled potatoes.
- For additional crunch, after frying potatoes, I have fried around 4 tablespoon of boiled/canned chickpeas. (this is optional)
Step III
- In a large bowl, add boiled chickpeas, red onion, tomatoes, coriander leaves, chaat masala, lemon juice, salt to taste, chile powder, tamarind chutney and toss till combined.
- Finally add the fried potatoes and mix well.
- Transfer this to serving bowl. Garnish it with sev, fried chickpeas.
- Aloo Chana Chaat or Potato Chickpea Salad is ready. Serve immediately and enjoy!
