    Zopf  is super easy to make, delicious and beautiful braided Swiss, Austrian or Bavarian bread made using 7 basic ingredients from your kitchen. Zopf in German means braid or plait. One of the best atrractive bread recipe to try and impress if you are a beginner.

    If you want to make quick and tasty bread, then this bread is for you. Its gorgeous with the golden crust and ready in 1 hour 30 minutes.

    Zopf is also known as Züpfe,  Butterzopf, Tresse, Treccia popular in switzerland and is served traditionally for breakfast Sunday mornings .

    I have made 3 medium sized zopfs from the dough. You can prepare 1 large zopf or 3 medium sized zopfs. I just love the aroma of the freshly baked bread in my kitchen.

    How do you eat Zopf (Züpfe) or Challah?

    This bread can be served with butter, jam, nutella or even with cheese for breakfast or simply dip a thick slice of zopf  into creamy soup for brunch, lunch or dinner. Like any other bread, this tastes the best on the same day its baked.

    Preparation time : 1 hour 30 minutes
    Serves : 3 Zopf

    Ingredients for Zopf or Züpfe braided bread

    Warm Milk - 1 ½ cup
    Melted Butter -  3 tbsp
    Active Dry Yeast - 1 packet or 2 ¼ teaspoon ( 7 g )
    All Purpose Flour - 3 ¾ cup
    Sugar - 1 tsp
    Salt - 1 ½ tsp
    Egg Yolk - 1
    Egg  White  - 1

    Steps to prepare Zopf or Züpfe braided bread
    • In a large mixing bowl add lukewarm milk, sugar and sprinkle a package of active dry yeast into it. Cover, and let the yeast activate. This will take approximately 10 minutes.
    • Now add egg yolk, salt, all purpose flour, melted butter and mix well using hand or wodden spoon till the dough comes together.
    • Now dust the working surface, transfer the dough and knead it for atleast 6 to 8 minutes till you get a smooth and elastic dough.
    • If you are making large zopf then divide the dough into 3 equal portions. if you are making medium zopfs then divide the dough into 9 portions.
    • Roll each piece into long cylinder. Braid 3 pieces together at time and pinch the ends.
    • Grease the baking sheet. add pinch of salt to egg white, mix well and brush each braid with the egg white.
    • Cover the dough with the warm cloth and let it rest in warm place for about 1 hour or till its doubled in size.
    • Preheat the oven for 425 degree F.
    • Brush the risen dough again with the egg white again and bake it for about 20 to 25 minutes or till its golden brown in color.
    • Zopf is now ready. let it cool for 5 minutes. Serve with butter and cup of coffee and enjoy.

      Hello Kushi..Before braiding, do we need to keep it in room temperature so that it will rise up? In the recipe only after braiding, you have kept till it gets doubled? Its bit cold here..so just checking...
