Creamed Peas in Bread Bowl is a rich and creamy, easy and delicious recipe for any meal. Green peas are simmered in the buttery cream sauce using simple ingredients. And for classic presentation and for making it a hearty meal, it's served in a homemade bread bowl.
I doubled the recipe than planned, and believe me; there were no leftovers. My kids asked for second servings making my Sunday an easy one as far as cooking for them and feeding them was concerned 🙂
Making creamed peas takes less than 10 minutes. So definitely one of the best side dishes to add for your holiday meal or busy working days.
You need butter, heavy cream, green peas (fresh or frozen), onions, and spring onion (scallions). The best part about the recipe is that it is very flexible. You can vary all the ingredients to taste. If you are making it regularly, you can cut down on the fat :-). Be generous with the butter only during holidays to make this dish rich and special 🙂
You can either make a bread bowl from scratch, as shown here in this video, or bring storebought sourdough bread or artisan bread of your choice if you want to make it even quicker and simple.
Homemade Bread Bowls for soup or dip
I followed the same recipe as my artisan bread loaf to make a homemade bread bowl with only five basic ingredients. You can check my quick video on the making of HOMEMADE BREAD BOWL.
This weekend only creamed peas were on our menu. I had leftover heavy cream in the refrigerator, and I was looking for a way to use them in a savory dish. When I decided to make creamed peas, I decided to present them in a bread bowl. The addition of the bread bowl to my Sunday menu was worth it. Instead of serving creamed peas as a side, it became a complete meal when presented with a bread bowl.
This bread bowl and creamed peas dish is one of the best and easiest recipes I have tried recently.
If you are looking for something new as a side dish for this Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner instead of mashed potatoes, you must check this out. It is going to be a total crowd-pleaser.

How to make Creamed peas in a Bread Bowl?
In a pan on medium heat, melt butter. Add onions and saute just till it turns soft. Do not caramelize the onions.
Add green peas, stock, and simmer for 3 minutes. Now add cream and continue to simmer until it bubbles and thickens, i.e., almost reduced by half. It takes about 3 to 5 minutes once the cream starts to simmer.
Add salt, spring onions, and stir for another 1 minute. Switch off the flame. Creamed Peas tastes best when served warm. Check video for more details
To serve creamed peas in a bread bowl
Cut the top of each bread. Scoop out the center. Do not discard these portions. You can use both top and center portions to dip in the creamed peas later. Watch this video for a better understanding.
Now add the creamed peas and top it with shredded mozzarella or other melting cheese of your choice. Broil until cheese has melted and the top becomes golden brown.
Tips:
- The mixture thickens as it cools down. So warm it before serving and if you find it too thick, thin it down with milk, cream, or water if desired.
- Since I made this especially for my kids, I have not added pepper powder, red pepper flakes, or garlic powder. If you want some heat and a strong flavor profile, feel free to add them as per your taste.
- To make it even more flavorful, you can add crispy bacon bits, potatoes, or mushrooms.
- You can even use canned peas in the recipe.
- Don't like spring onions? Skip and add some fresh herbs like basil or parsley if desired.
Can I make vegan creamed peas?
Yes. To vegan creamed peas, use olive oil or coconut oil instead of butter and coconut milk or cream instead of heavy cream.
WHAT RECIPES CAN BUTTER CREAM SAUCE BE USED FOR?
You can use this on top of steak or any other meat, toss it with pasta, or serve it with flatbreads like avocado flatbread, or use it to toss stir fry vegetables.
