    Equipment

    Ingredients
      

    To activate the yeast

    • ¼ cup Warm water
    • 1 tablespoon Sugar
    • 2 ¼ teaspoon Active dry yeast

    For the dough

    • ¼ cup Sugar
    • 1 teaspoon Salt
    • ½ cup Mashed potatoes
    • 1 cup Lukewarm milk
    • 1 Egg beaten
    • ¼ cup Butter melted
    • 4 ½ cups of all-purpose flour in increments.

    Instructions
     

    Activate yeast

    • Add water and sugar to a bowl. Add yeast and mix. Cover and leave it for 10 minutes. Let the yeast activate.
      ¼ cup Warm water, 1 tablespoon Sugar, 2 ¼ teaspoon Active dry yeast

    Make the dough

    • To this, add sugar, salt, mashed potatoes, warm milk, and mix. Add the egg and mix well. Next, add melted butter and mix well.
      ¼ cup Sugar, 1 teaspoon Salt, ½ cup Mashed potatoes, 1 cup Lukewarm milk, 1 Egg, ¼ cup Butter
    • Add flour in increments of 1 cup and knead to form a soft, smooth, and elastic dough. Transfer it to a greased bowl. Cover and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
      4 ½ cups of all-purpose flour

    Shape into buns or rolls

    • Dust the working surface. Transfer the dough and shape it into a rectangle. Divide into 24 equal portions.
    • Shape each portion into a ball and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let it rest for 20 to 25 minutes.

    Bake the rolls

    • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
    • Brush it with egg wash or cream (optional).
    • Bake in preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.

    • For the vegan version of potato rolls, skip the egg and instead of butter, use vegetable shortening.

    Old Fashioned potato rolls recipe

    Potato rolls are made using mashed potatoes, flour, butter, egg, sugar, salt and yeast. Adding mashed potatoes adds moisture to your bread rolls, making them soft and tender and allowing them to remain fresh for a longer time—one of the best make-ahead recipes.

    You can use this for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner or as a sandwich slider.

    Ingredients for potato buns

    Potatoes: Mashed potato makes your bread soft and tender.

    Yeast: Bread to rise.

    Milk and butter: Makes it rich, buttery and soft.

    Ingredients used to make potato rolls or homemade potato buns.

    Egg: For the fluffy texture.

    Flour: Regular all-purpose flour is used in the recipe.

    Step-by-step instructions

    Activate yeast.

When ready to bake, place these on the baking pan and let it rise for 2 hours, and then follow the baking instructions.
