    In short smoothie bowl is nothing but a soft served smoothie eaten from a bowl rather than a cup with added toppings like granola, seeds, dry fruits and nuts, or fresh fruits.

    Homemade smoothie bowls are actually healthy and nutritious as there are no added sugars and are made with a base of frozen fruits like bananas.

    What is the difference between a smoothie bowl and an acai bowl?

    Smoothie bowls are generally soft served prepared similar to smoothie but eaten in a bowl with added toppings. Acai bowls are super thick and creamy smoothie bowls with a special ingredient, namely, acai berry puree.

    How to make a smoothie bowl?

    Assemble the base first, blend the smoothie, pour it into a bowl, and add toppings of your choice.

    • For best results, use frozen fruits or freeze fruits overnight.
    • Blend the ingredients few times till everything gets blended properly scrapping the sides till it reaches soft-serve consistency.
    • I would recommend blending at low speed and then add liquid (whole milk or non-dairy milk like coconut, almond, cashew, or soy) in 1 tablespoon increments only if you find it difficult to blend the frozen ingredients in your blender.  The amount of liquid you add makes a difference between smoothie and smoothie bowl.

    How do you thicken a smoothie bowl?

    Added too much liquid? Don't worry. To thicken the smoothie bowl increase one of these in the recipe.

    • Add more frozen fruit
    • Add protein powder

    Ingredients for Black Plum Smoothie Bowl

    1 cup frozen Banana
    2 cups deseeded,  frozen Black plum or Jamun (check tips for substitute)
    2 to 3 tablespoon Milk (dairy or non-dairy, optional)
    Toppings of your choice

    How to make Black Plum Smoothie Bowl?

    In a blender, add frozen bananas, deseeded black plums, and blend on low speed.

    Add milk only if you find it difficult to blend in increments of 1 tablespoon and continue to blend at low speed, scraping the sides of the blender till you reach soft-serve consistency.

    Scoop into a serving bowl and add desired toppings. Dig in and enjoy.

    Tips and substitutes
    • If you are not able to find black plum or Jamun, substitute it with mixed berries, strawberries, or frozen acai puree.
    • You can even add apple juice or orange juice or ice-cold water or ice cubes instead of milk.
    • I generally skip adding sweeteners to the smoothie bowl as the sweetness from the fruit is sufficient. If you really love it very sweet then add honey.
    Can I store leftover smoothies?

    Smoothies can be stored in mason jars or air-tight containers in the fridge for 2 to 3 days and in the freezer for up to 3 months. You can even pour them into ice cube trays and add them to the next smoothie. This will give great texture and flavor for the next smoothie.

    Ingredients
      

    • 1 cup Bananas , chopped and frozen
    • 2 cup Black plum or Jamun, deseeded and frozen (check tips for substitutes)
    • 2 to 3 tablespoon Milk (dairy or non-dairy, optional)

    Use any Toppings of your choice from list below

    • Fruits of your choice – mango, banana, kiwi, berries (strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, etc.)
    • Coconut flakes, unsweetened
    • Hemp seeds
    • Chia seeds
    • Watermelon seeds
    • Melon seeds
    • Granola
    • Chocolate chips
    • Nut butter

    Instructions
     

    • In a blender, add frozen bananas, black plums and blend at low speed until ground into coarse bits.
      1 cup Bananas, 2 cup Black plum
    • Add milk in increments of 1 tablespoon only if you find it difficult to blend, and continue to blend at low speed, scraping the sides of the blender till you reach a soft-serve consistency.
      2 to 3 tablespoon Milk
    • Scoop into a serving bowl and add desired toppings. Serve and enjoy.

      I bought Jamun frozen and it appears it’s frozen fresh (with pit). How do I make a smoothie bowl with frozen jamun? I saw it at my Indian grocery store and wanted to explore a new fruit but can’t imagine cooking with a fruit with a pit. Thank you for any insight, Damaris

        You have to thaw and separate the pulp from pits just like you do dates. I hope this helps
