Crispy Spiral French Fries, also known as tornado fries or mashed potato fries, is the new trending way to enjoy the potatoes. These fries are crispy on the outside, creamy inside, and I bet you can't stop after eating one 🙂
Spiral French Fries is one of the best recipes to add to your kids' snack menu or serve at birthday parties or even as a side or finger food for your beer parties.
Potato is one vegetable that almost all love and french fries are always difficult to resist. Whenever we visit any restaurant, french fries, also known as finger chips, is something that we order first to keep our kids busy 🙂 I wanted to try something fun with potatoes.
I had two things in mind twistato or spiral fries (curly fries) and I chose to make these spiral fries for my boys. If you are following me on Instagram. you should have already seen my little monsters' happy weekend faces after eating these fries 🙂
The ingredients needed for this recipe are super simple. You can add any spices and herbs of your choice to make it more flavorful. We like just the plain salted ones, and therefore I have not added additional add-ons.
Instagram stories
When I had shared the pictures of my boys enjoying these fries, I had asked my followers to guess what they were eating, and many said jalebi (one of the most popular Indian pastry sweets) while others said these were chaklis 🙂 Guys, let me tell you, these aloo jalebis are dangerous than all of them as you will lose count on the number of fries you ate 🙂 And if you are like me, who would first serve food to family and any visiting guests, then make sure to reserve a portion, or else you are only going to see an empty plate 🙂
Having said that, if you have any leftover mashed potatoes after Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, you should definitely try making these mashed potato fries.
Ingredients for Crispy SPiral French Fries
3 Potatoes, boiled
⅓ cup Corn flour (check tips)
¼ cup Milk
½ teaspoon Salt (adjust to taste)
1 Egg
How to make Crispy Spiral French Fries or Potato Fries
In a bowl, add one egg, whisk and keep it aside.
Take another bowl, add the boiled potatoes and mash them thoroughly. To this, add cornflour, milk, salt, egg, and mix until smooth and well combined.
Fill your piping bag or plastic bag, or Ziploc bag with the potato mixture. Take a small piece of parchment paper, practice piping the dough into a spiral, and check if the dough holds its shape and is not sticky.
Heat oil in a pan for frying. To check if it's hot, drop a piece of potato mixture, and it should sizzle and come up immediately.
Once the oil is hot, press the upper portion of the piping bag to squeeze out the potato mixture and form a spiral pattern of one or two rounds directly into the oil. (Check the video for better understanding).
Using a spatula or wooden spoon, move it in a circular motion to roast evenly at the bottom. Flip and cook on another side till it's crisp and golden brown.
Repeat the process for the remaining potato mixture. Serve hot with ketchup and enjoy.
Tips:
- Every batch of potatoes has different moisture and starch content and therefore behaves differently. Adjust the amount of flour (corn flour, all-purpose flour, potato starch, etc.) until you get the right consistency. One-third cup measurement given in the recipe above is a good starting point.
- I have prepared plain salted fries as my kids don't like spicy food. You can add chile powder, pepper powder, pepper flakes, garlic powder if needed to the mixture.
- If you are a cheese lover, you can even add parmesan cheese to the mixture.
- You can substitute cornflour with potato starch, all-purpose flour, or even rice flour.
- I forgot to add egg in the mixture first and added it later. Please do not skip egg as it won't turn out good. It will absorb too much oil and not hold its shape in oil.
- Crispiness will vary depending on the intensity of flame you fry, the flour used, and the potatoes' texture.
Are you scared of making these spirals directly in hot oil?
Make the spirals in parchment paper, place them on a baking sheet, and freeze them overnight. The next day when you are ready to eat, fry them like any other frozen fries, and it will turn out crispy.
