What are Parker House Rolls? Why are they called Parker House rolls?
These Boston based rolls were created by Parker house, a famous hotel in Boston, during 1870's. The story behind these dinner rolls or biscuits rolls creation has several variations but main reason in all the stories that I read was that an angry pastry chef throwing unfinished rolls into the oven, which results in their dented appearance.

Ingredients for Homemade Parker House Rolls
Whole milk - 1 ½ cup warmed
Active dry yeast - 1 packet ( 2 ¼ tsp)
Unsalted Butter - 1 stick (8 tbsp) melted + little more for brushing
Sugar - ¼ cup + 1 tsp
Egg - 1
Salt - 1 ½ tsp
All purpose flour - 4 cups
How to make Homemade Parker House Rolls or Dinner Rolls from scratch?
Step I
- In bowl, add warm milk, 1 teaspoon of sugar and mix well. Sprinkle the yeast and let the yeast activate. This might take about 5 to 10 minutes.
Step II
- Meanwhile, melt the butter and let it cool.
- Beat the egg in a small bowl and keep it aside.
Step III
- Once the yeast activates, add the melted butter, beaten egg, salt, sugar and mix.
- Add the all purpose flour and mix using a wooden spoon until the mixture comes together.
- Transfer this to working surface and knead it for about 5 minutes till you get a very soft dough / ball.
- Place the dough in lightly greased bowl. Cover it and let it rise in warm place for about 1 hour or until it is doubled in size.
Step IV
- Lightly coat your baking pan with butter.
- Transfer the risen dough to working surface, cut them into 15 equal pieces and make small balls or into desired any shapes.
- Place these rolls in the baking pan ½ inch apart and cover it with warm towel.
- Let it rise for about 1 to 2 hours or until doubled in size (rolls start touching each other)
Step V
- Preheat the oven to 350 degree F.
- Lightly brush the rolls with the melted butter and bake for about 25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Parker House Rolls are now ready. Brush with butter just before you serve and enjoy. Happy Thanksgiving
How do you serve Parker House Rolls?
I just love to spread some butter and sprinkle some salt or simply brush with some salted butter and eat it. These rolls can also be served with roasted turkey, creamy and comforting soups or pasta dishes. Totally a great side for your holiday dinner table.
Make ahead Parker house rolls or Dinner rolls or Biscuits rolls?
Once you prepare the dough and shape them to rolls, allow it to rise till doubled in size, then cover the rolls and refrigerate upto 24 hours till you are ready to use. Let stand at room temperature for about 30 to 45 minutes. Meanwhile you can preheat your oven and then bake it as directed in the recipe.
Can I freeze Parker House Rolls or Dinner Rolls?
Freezer rolls : Once you prepare the dough, shape them to rolls and allow it to rise as mentioned in the recipe freeze them on baking sheet for atleast 1 hour or till it becomes hard. Next tranfer them into freezer bag or freezer containers. You can freeze biscuits or dinner rolls upto 1 month.
Freezing Baked Rolls Like any other rolls, parker house rolls can be frozen once baked. Once you have baked the rolls, allow it to cool down completley. Next tranfer them into freezer bag or freezer contaners. You can freeze biscuits or dinner rolls upto 1 month.
How do you heat frozen rolls?
Baking Freezer Rolls : Thaw freezer rolls for atleast 2 hours on baking sheet. Then preheat and bake at the temperature as directed in the recipe.
Reheating Baked Rolls When you want to reheat or serve, thaw the rolls on baking sheets for atleast 45 minutes and then warm it up at 300 degree until it is warmed through. This may take anywhere between 15 to 20 minutes.
How to make Vegan parker House rolls or Eggless parker House rolls?
To make Eggless Parker House Rolls you can substitute egg with milk powder or cream. If you have sour cream or yogurt or buttermilk you can even use that as well. Use ¼ cup of the above substitute per egg.
To make rolls Vegan instead of butter use Vegan Margarine, almond milk for whole milk and egg with non dairy powdered milk. This is definetly going to change the taste and the texture of the rolls. But these are some of the best options for vegan diet.
