Ingredients
Pie crust dough: I have used my homemade leftover pie dough to make these Nutella rolls. You can also make these delicious treats with store-bought pie dough, refrigerated crescent rolls, or puff pastries.
Nutella: Who doesn't love a recipe with Nutella chocolate hazelnut spread?
Melted butter: This is used to brush the crescent rolls before making them. You can use salted or unsalted butter. I like to use salted ones as it adds a wonderfully sweet and salty flavor.
Sugar: This gives extra sweetness to your rolls.
See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.
Variations and Substitutions
- Homemade pie dough can be substituted with store-bought pie dough, refrigerated crescent rolls, tortillas, or puff pastry sheets.
- Not a Nutella fan? Then use peanut butter, almond butter, or lotus biscoff spread and follow the recipe.
- If you like to add crunchiness to your rolls, then top your Nutella with hazelnut, pecans, or almonds before shaping them into crescent rolls.
- You can substitute regular sugar with powdered sugar. But make sure you add them once it is out of the oven. Also, cinnamon sugar tastes good; you can sprinkle it if you like or simply drizzle it with caramel sauce.
- Nutella pairs well with strawberries. So you can garnish the top of each roll-up with strawberries.
- If you are not a nut butter fan, then you can even use cream cheese to make crescent rolls with cream cheese.
- You can simply make Nutella quesadilla or Nutella tortilla wrap instead of crescent rolls using tortillas. Fold it into triangles or wrap it as desired.
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper and keep this aside.
Step 2: Roll the pie dough onto a lightly floured work surface to a 12-inch circle. Evenly spread the Nutella (hazelnut spread) onto this crust.
Step 3: Cut them into 16 equal portions (slice/triangle) using a pizza cutter.
Step 4: Roll up from the wide end of the triangle to form a crescent shape. Place rolls on a baking sheet 1 inch apart.
Step 5: Brush the tops with melted butter and sprinkle sugar.
Step 6: Bake for about 12 to 15 minutes or until it is light golden brown. Serve warm, and enjoy.
Tips
- Adding a little extra hazelnut spread is good but do not overdo it, as it will bubble out and become a mess when baking.
- If you use store-bought pie dough and want to use the entire pack, double the Nutella, butter, and sugar amounts.
Storage and Make ahead instructions
- The baked Nutella crescent rolls can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for two days and in the refrigerator for up to a week.
- I don't recommend making them ahead or freezing them once baked, as nothing can beat the taste of freshly made warm crescent rolls right from the oven.
Recipe FAQs
Nutella-filled crescent rolls taste the best when served warm for breakfast with a cup of coffee or as a quick after-meal dessert. Since they taste equally good at room temperature, it is one of the best options for your kid's lunchbox, summer potlucks, and picnics or holiday dinner parties.
Crescent rolls are a versatile option for pie crust and a convenient choice when you're short on time. They work well with sweet or savory fillings and offer a delicious flavor in either case.
There are several tasty ways to enjoy Nutella. It complements various fruits, and you can also swirl it into a bowl of oatmeal for added flavor. It can take s'mores to the next level. Use it in pancakes, crepes, muffins, cookies, and more. Check out Nutella cookies, Strawberry Nutella crepes, and Quick Nutella strawberry toast.
