Strawberry Crumble or Strawberry Crisp is a simple, delicious, and stunning summer dessert where juicy and sweet strawberries are topped with crispy, nutty, and buttery crumb topping. You should try this out if you are looking for a crowd-pleaser dessert!
About Strawberry Crumble Recipe
When fresh and beautiful strawberries are in season, I love to use them in my recipes. Strawberry crumble or crisp is a sweet and flavorful dessert that is perfect for summer brunch, barbecue (BBQ) weekend, potluck party, or any get-together.
Fruit crumbles are so easy to make and require very basic ingredients from your kitchen. Once you get comfortable preparing the crispy crumb topping, you don't need a recipe. You can use any seasonal fruits that are overripe or getting soft in your pantry and prepare delicious fruit crumbles on short notice.
For the strawberry crumble recipe, I mix together strawberry, flour, sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon powder and spread it in a baking pan. Then top it with a mixture of old-fashioned oats, sugar, flour, cinnamon powder, and cold butter. To give it an additional crunchy texture, sprinkle sliced almonds on top.
To keep your topping light and crunchy, make sure you do not over-mix it. Bake it till the strawberry juices start bubbling and the topping becomes golden brown.
You can also make this dessert any time of the year with frozen fruits or using other seasonal fruits. Plus, you can also combine two or more fruits if you like. Some of my favorite fruits for crisps are rhubarb, apples, peaches, raspberries, and blackberries. You can prepare this in any oven-safe dish or baking pan of your choice. You can also bake this dish in a ramekin as individual servings.
Don't forget to serve this dessert with ice cream or whipped cream. This is optional, but pairing it with a scoop of ice cream makes it a party-worthy dessert.
Ingredients For Strawberry Crumble/Crisp
For the filling
- Strawberries add their natural sweetness, tartness, and gorgeous pink color to the dish. Use any seasonal fruits/berries of your choice.
- All-purpose flour helps thicken the strawberry mixture and absorb excess moisture. Cornstarch or Almond flour can be used as a replacement.
- Sugar is added for sweetness. Sugar can be replaced with other sweeteners and its amount can be adjusted based on the natural sweetness of the strawberries.
- A pinch of Salt is to highlight the sweetness of the fruit medley.
- Vanilla extract and Cinnamon powder are used for flavor. You can use any flavor combination of your choice.
For the topping
- Light brown sugar is used to sweeten the crumb topping. You can also use dark brown sugar, regular sugar, etc.
- All purpose flour and Cold unsalted Butter are the main ingredients of the crumb topping. It is important to use cold butter to get a light and crumbly texture. Salted butter can be used. Almond flour or Coconut flour can be used in place of all-purpose flour.
- Salt is added for a savory note to the crumb topping. If you are using salted butter, please skip adding salt.
- Cinnamon powder is added for flavor.
- Old-fashioned rolled oats add crunchiness to the topping when baked. This can be skipped if unavailable and be replaced with all purpose flour. Quick oats can also be used instead of old-fashioned rolled oats.
- Almonds are used to add a nutty flavor and crunchiness to the crumble topping. Replace almonds with any nuts of your choice, or they can be skipped.

Step 1 - Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9-inch baking pan and keep it ready.
Step 2 - In a large bowl, add strawberries, flour, sugar, salt, vanilla extract, and cinnamon powder and stir gently till combined. Spread this mixture in the greased baking pan.
Step 3 - In another bowl, add brown sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon powder, and mix. Add cold butter and work the butter using a fork/pastry cutter until coarse crumbs are formed. Then, add the rolled oats and mix. Place this mixture in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes for the butter to firm up.
Step 4 - Spread the topping mixture over the strawberries evenly. Add sliced almonds. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until the juices start bubbling around the edges of the pan and the crumb topping and almond slices turn golden brown in color.
Let this cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Serve Strawberry Cinnamon Crisp with your favorite ice cream, and enjoy.
Expert Tips
- Granola or Muesli can be added to the crumb topping instead of old-fashioned rolled oats for additional crunch and flavor.
- Do not skip adding flour to the strawberry mixture. When baked, strawberries will release a lot of liquid which will be absorbed and thickened by the flour. The absence of flour will result in a watery base and make it difficult to serve.
- Use any seasonal fruits of your choice. I have tried this recipe with different berries, apples, peaches, plums, rhubarb, etc.
Storage
Store any leftover strawberry crumble in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. It can be served cold. However, if you prefer it warm, reheat it in a microwave for 20 to 30 seconds or until just warmed through.
FAQs
After the mixture for the crumb topping is prepared, put it back in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes so that the butter firms up. Then sprinkle this mixture over the fruit and immediately bake until golden. This additional step of freezing the crumble mixture before baking ensures a perfectly crumbly and crispy crust every single time.
Yes. Let the frozen berries thaw for 1 or 2 hours at room temperature, before proceeding with the recipe. This allows you to enjoy this dessert any time of the year!
