The sweet version of appe is mainly prepared on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi or sankashti chaturthi.

What is appe or Paniyaram?
Appe is popular South Indian breakfast recipe prepared in both sweet and savory form using rice, wheat flour or rava (sooji, semolina) as main ingredient.
Appo is known by various names in Southern India, including paddu, appe, guliappa, Kuzhi paniyaram. Appo is prepared in different variations using wheat flour, semolina. You can click here for instant wheat appe or instant banana appe or paniyaram.Â

My  family's favorite among all is appo prepared using rice. This is soft and tasty with full of flavor. It gets over in no time. Make sure that you prepare it in plenty. Don't hold back on ghee / melted butter while cooking appos because this enhances the flavor.
Preparation time : 20 minutes
Soak time : 1 to 2 hour
Rest time : 1 hour
Serves : 36 small appos
Ingredients for Sweet Rice Appo or Sweet Rice Appe or Sweet Banana Paniyaram
Rice - 1 cup
Ripe Bananas - 3
Jaggery  / Gur - ¾ cup
Poha / Flattened rice - 2 tbsp
Grated coconut - 3 tbsp
Semolina / Sooji Rava - 1 tablespoon (optional)
Baking soda - ¼ tsp
Cardamom powder - ¼ tsp
Salt - pinch
Melted butter - for cooking appos
How to make Sweet Rice Appo or Sweet Rice Appe or Banana Paniyaram
- Wash and soak the rice in water for about 1 to 2 hours and drain them.
- I have used 3 small riped bananas. (you can use 1 large banana)
- Grind the soaked rice, 2 bananas, jaggery, poha, coconut adding little water to form smooth paste.
- Transfer this to bowl. Add semolina or sooji rava (optional), baking soda, cardamom powder, pinch of salt and mix well. The batter should be of medium-thick consistency.
- Let the batter rest for 1 hour for better result. You can also cook them immediately.
- Chop and add the remaining banana to the batter and mix well.
- Heat appe pan or paniyaram pan and add butter or ghee into all the holes. Pour the batter on each holes, cover with the lid and allow it to cook in medium flame.
- When it is cooked from one side turn and cook on the other side adding butter till its golden brown on both the sides.
- Repeat the process for remaining batter.
- Sweet Rice Appo is ready. Serve hot with ghee and enjoy.
Tip:
- Depending on the sweetness of the banana vary the amount of jaggery.
- You can also substitute jaggery with brown sugar or sugar.
- If you do not have appe or paniyaram pan, you can prepare this on ebelskiver pan or also cook dosa or pancake from same batter.
