Krishna Janmashtami Recipes: This post includes traditional prasadam and naivedyam recipes, Lord Krishna's favorite sweets. This year, Gokulashtami (Krishna Janmashtami) is celebrated on Monday, August 26th, 2024.
Janmashtami festival
Krishna Janmashtami, also known as Gokulashtami, Krishna Ashtami, or Krishna Jayanthi, is an Indian festival celebrating Lord Krishna's birthday, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. Every year, this day is celebrated on the eighth day, called the Ashtami of the Krishna paksha in Sharavan month.
Gokulashtami is celebrated in different forms around the world, depending on regional and cultural customs. In the simplest way, Hindus celebrate Janmashtami by fasting, praying together with Tulsi Archana, preparing sweets, and offering in the form of naivedyam and prasadam. This celebration is followed by dahi handi (mosaru kudike) the next day in Maharastra, Udupi, etc.
What is chappan bhog?
Chappan Bhog is a special prasad in thali that consists of 56 items which is offered to Lord Krishna for Gokulashtami (Janmashtami).
What is Krishna's favorite food?
Makhan Mishri (butter and sugar) and anything made from milk and milk products are considered Lord Krishna's favorite foods. You can also offer makhan (butter) and homemade ghee.
Prasad and Naivedyam
Panchamrit, also known as charanamrit, is a holy prasad made from five ingredients: milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar, and holy basil (tulsi). On Lord Krishna's birthday, sweet poha (aval) and sweet and savory dahi poha (gopalkala) are offered. Fruits can also be offered.
